Paradise of an Island: Pangkor Island Malaysia

November 28, 2019 by Eric GMH

Just when you thought there is no other island paradise on Earth, the picturesque sceneries of Pangkor Island is bound to make you think otherwise.

Beautiful white sand, clear blue skies, crystal clear waters, wonderful coral reefs and flora and fauna…little wonder many people who visited Pangkor Island had great impressions about the place, calling it an island paradise.

It is even fitting that Pangkor Island is named as such from the Thai word “Pang Koh” which means “beautiful island”, considering the stunning landscape is proof of its beauty.

Where is Pangkor Island?

Pangkor Island is located off the coast of Perak in between Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Pangkor Island is made up of five islands in total, with Pangkor being the main island followed by three smaller islands called Pangkor Laut, Pulau Mentagor and Pulau Giam plus an isle called Pulau Pelandok.

As an island on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Pangkor Island is pretty much shielded by the monsoon impact. And because of ideal Pangkor Island weather that is neither too warm or too cold, this makes it one of the popular places to visit in Malaysia all year round.

Things to Do in Pangkor Island

Exploring Pangkor Island Beaches

What do you do on an island? Explore the beautiful beaches of course! Pangkor Island has a few pretty beaches worth setting up a beach chair or mat and basking under the sun while enjoying the lovely views they offer.

Pantai Pasir Bogak is the most popular beach on the island followed by Nipah beach at Nipah Bay (or Teluk Nipah). Other notable beaches include Ketapang beach at Teluk Ketapang and the secluded Segadas beach at Teluk Segadas, though for Segadas beach, reaching there may be tougher than others.

You will need to travel by foot for about 25 minutes from Teluk Gedung town via a jungle route to reach the secret beach, but the trip is worth it since Segadas beach is known to be the most beautiful beach at Pangkor Island.

Water Sports & Activities

There are plenty of fun water activities to do at Pangkor Island: you could go for boat rides on a round-the-island tour, snorkel on your own or join a snorkel tour, or rent a kayak or a jet ski.

A round-the-island tour is good for getting an overall view of the island – you can either join a group boat tour or hire a private boat to enjoy the ride at your own pace. Group boat tour is priced between RM50 to RM60 per pax, while a private boat hire costs between RM200 to RM300, though you could attempt to negotiate for a more affordable price. The tour takes about four hours.

You could also go for a snorkel tour where you will join other tourists in a group to explore the underwater marine lives at Pulau Giam, which costs around RM50 to RM60 per person. Alternatively, you could rent snorkel gear for RM10 an hour if you prefer checking out the reefs and fishes by yourself.

For some water sports fun, consider kayaking or jet skiing across the beautiful waters! You can rent a kayak for RM20 per hour or rent for a day for RM80. Rental for jet ski is costlier though, around RM70 to RM100 ringgit for a duration of 20 minutes depending on the type of engine.

Hiking up Pangkor Hill

Pangkor Hill is the summit on Pangkor Island, standing about 350 metres tall. The hike up this hill can be moderately difficult but the trip is rewarding when you reach the peak and see for yourself the wondrous views of the sun, sea, sand and greeneries surrounding the island.

To get there, you will need to travel the path from Pantai Pasir Bogak. Hiking up Pangkor Hill may take an average of one hour or more depending on your speed. You could consider bringing some food for some picnic atop the hill – the cool ambience plus pretty scenery set as an ideal picnic setting though! You could also watch the sunrise and sunset here.

Visiting Chinatown on Pangkor Island

Need some vibrant colours on your island trip? Head over to Pangkor Island’s Chinatown, one of the interesting Pangkor Island attractions!

Experience a different cultural setting in the midst of the Malay-centric island. Chinatown houses lots of Chinese-inhabited homes, evident from the hanging of red lanterns at house porches and traditional Chinese decorations.

While you’re at it, allow yourself the opportunity to taste some Chinese-style street food at family-owned Chinese restaurants to complete the visit!

Visiting Foo Ling Kong Temple

A visit to Pangkor Island is not complete without a peek at this famous Taoist Temple on the island. Many people of different faiths flock to this iconic spot on the island, some to offer wishes and prayers to the temple gods, while the rest go there to admire the amazing architecture and scenic surroundings.

Built at Sungai Pinang Besar village at the foot of Pangkor Hill, Foo Lin Kong Temple is well-known for its turtle pond, gorgeously-tended gardens, mini Great Wall of China replica and the “Rock of Fate”. Definitely a place to go among other Pangkor Island attractions if you are an avid Instagrammer for one best photography location!

Visiting Kota Belanda

If you are a fan of historical sites and buildings, then you should check out this old Dutch fort in a fishing village on the island called Kampung Teluk Gedung.

Visitors get to check out the remaining ruins of the once solidly built fort used to store tin ore by the Dutch. What was left from the building’s former glory today is a roofless three-walled structure, maintained to serve as one of Pangkor Island attractions. The circular holes or windows of the fort was said to house nine cannons to defend the fort.

Other Attractions:

  • Kali Amman Temple
  • Batu Bersurat (Tiger Rock/Sacred Rock/ Inscribed Rock)

Pulau Kapas: A Charming, Pristine Gem of an Island

November 21, 2019 by Eric GMH

If you are looking to settle for a quiet island holiday, Pulau Kapas Malaysia may be just the place you need to whisk yourself away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Hello, Pulau Kapas!

Hello, Pulau Kapas! Source: jonesaroundtheworld.com

All of us need a break or a holiday every now and then when the stress from daily life, work or anything else makes us want to scream and rip our hair out due to extreme frustration. And what better way to escape from such stress than going for a vacation on an island that is less hogged by tourists, a place where its natural beauty is still very much preserved and you can get all the peace you want?

A Little Bit about Kapas Island – Location of Pulau Kapas Terengganu

Cute Pulau Kapas map marking the location of Pulau Kapas

Pulau Kapas is part of Terengganu, located about 6 kilometres east of Marang, Kuala Terengganu. Pulau Kapas (Kapas Island or 棉花岛) is named as such to reflect the beautiful white beaches that is scattered around the island. Perhaps at the time the name came about, the beaches probably looked as white as cotton, or even like cotton themselves?

The best time to visit Pulau Kapas is during the off-peak season – consider travelling to the island somewhere in March and in October to avoid large crowds as tourists start trickling in from April until September. We suggest going around early March for the best Pulau Kapas weather though!

Interesting Things to Do in Pulau Kapas Terengganu

Snorkelling & Scuba Diving

Beautiful corals at Pulau Kapas

You may be surprised to know that Pulau Kapas has a beautiful range of coral reefs underwater, some claim to be even better and healthier than other more popular islands such as Pulau Redang or Pulau Tioman. Even though there are fewer types of coral species available there, the reefs and the wonderful marine life are worth checking out.

You can rent a snorkel for RM 10 or join a snorkel tour for a more expensive fee of RM 40 (you can try haggling for a lower price though). If you are feeling more adventurous and you can swim really well, you could also consider snorkelling all the way to a private island next to Kapas Island, called Gem Island.

Visiting Gem Island

Gem Island from a distance.

You could go for a day trip Pulau Kapas to Gem Island (also called Pulau Gemia) – this private island houses a Pulau Kapas resort called Gem Island Resort & Spa, where you can get a comfortable stay within a beautiful lodging.

Gem Island has two lovely beaches with its soft white sand where you can relax and are great for snorkelling, swimming and scuba diving. If you are lucky (most likely you are), you can catch sight of harmless sharks as you snorkel or scuba dive.

You will need to take a boat ride from Longsha campsite to get to Gem Island. Just ask around at Longsha campsite and the people there will be able to arrange a boat for you.

Exploring Pulau Kapas Beaches

Pulau Kapas has gorgeous beaches where you can see and feel for yourself the fine white sand and the clear blue waters that make this place one of the most beautiful islands in Malaysia.

A unique thing about Pulau Kapas is that you can walk using the pathway that is built-in along the beaches to travel from one stretch of beach to another. However, do take note of the low and high tides – some secluded yet most beautiful parts of beaches on the island may require a low tide so that you can cross over to them.

Kayaking

Kayaks for rent, anyone?

If you are not inclined to walk from one end of the beach to another, you could also tour around the island on a kayak, which can be rented at Kapas Coral Beach Resort for a rate of RM 20 per hour. Kayaking allows you to visit the more secret bays of the island that otherwise are not very accessible by foot.

If you have done that already and can’t think of anything else better to do, just race in a kayak against one another for a change for those travelling in a group!

Hiking up Bukit Singa Pulau Kapas

What a lovely hill view of Bukit Singa!

Apart from water activities, you could also hike up the two small hills of Pulau Kapas, collectively known as Bukit Singa. The hills are not that tall, possibly measuring about 100 metres, and you can definitely cover both mounds in a few hours.

Do hike with caution as there are sharp rocks and steep pathways to watch out for. Not only that but you will also find bird’s eggs randomly scattered around and you wouldn’t want to step on those too!

Where to stay in Pulau Kapas Terengganu

Overview of Pulau Kapas accommodation.

While there are not many resorts around Pulau Kapas that most people would consider comfortable as compared to living in the city, here are some notable ones that you could consider for Pulau Kapas hotel:

Kapas Beach Chalet

View of KBC.

View of KBC. Source: backpackingmalaysia.com

Otherwise known as KBC, this Pulau Kapas chalet is a popular Pulau Kapas accommodation with clean, well-maintained rooms. KBC can be quite a confusing place for newcomers since it is made up of two sides, the beach chalets run by a Dutch while the other part, made up of budget rooms and dorms, is run by local Malay.

The beach chalet offers air conditioned rooms at a rate of RM170 per night.  For the budget rooms, you can get a double fan room with shared bathroom for RM80 per night or a double air conditioned room en suite for RM120 per night. A dorm bed for RM19 per night will be the cheapest option here.

If you don’t mind spending a bit more than usual for accommodation, then Kapas Turtle Valley might be a choice worth considering in your Pulau Kapas resort options. This Dutch-owned Pulau Kapas hotel offers double room with private bathroom, hot showers, breakfast and wifi (yay internet!) for a rate of RM240, not bad for a Pulau Kapas package.

The resort’s bungalows are located in a private beach on the island facing the sea, and it is interesting to know that Kapas Turtle Valley is the only place that accepts card payments. However, do note that the accommodation requires a minimum of two nights stay per booking.

Longsha Campsite

Being the more popular camping ground, Longsha Campsite is a great alternative for Pulau Kapas accommodation if you are keen on experiencing camping life on an island. All you need is a camping tent and a sleeping bag or mat which you could rent from the campsite for a fee of RM5 per night for each item. You could save up a bit more if you bring your own sleeping bag though.

Basic facilities are available such as cold shower and squat toilet. You can also use their kitchen facilities to do some cooking for yourself. This campsite is the perfect place to stay for backpackers and solo travellers – you get to meet new people and make new friends here.

Other places of stay:

  • Harmony Campsite
  • Qimi Chalet
  • Kapas Coral Beach Resort
  • Ombak Kapas Island Beach Resort
  • Pak Ya Sea View Chalet
  • Kapas Island Resort
  • Captain Long House

Jetty Cafe

  • One of the few places on the island with internet connectivity, although the line isn’t as very fast

Qimi Chalet

  • Fresh fruit juices
  • Good for romantic settings, candlelight dinner available
  • Important: You will need to order your meal before 4pm.

  • Good place to hangout with books – there is a large selection of titles you can borrow
  • Great for lunch
  • Good variety of food

  • Important: Kitchen is only open from 8am to 3.30pm and 7pm to 9.30pm.

Do Your Own Cooking at Longsha Campsite

  • Nope, this is not a restaurant’s name
  • Well-equipped kitchen available for use at this campsite
  • Perfect for backpackers, solo travellers or anyone who likes cooking own meals
  • Important: Remember to buy your own groceries prior to visiting the island!

Tips to Pulau Kapas

So what are the things to be careful about when visiting Pulau Kapas? Here are some useful tips and important reminders for you:

  • Pulau Kapas is not open during the monsoon season (November-February).
  • Pulau Kapas is not a party island – do not expect pubs/bars and bonfires.
  • Bring enough cash as there is no ATM available on the island.
  • Bring your own alcohol as the island only has a few places that sell beer that can be rather expensive (RM10 for a can of beer).
  • Consider bringing your own food, or groceries to do some cooking if you plan to go on a more budget trip.
  • Remember to bring insect repellents to ward off those pesky friends!
  • Bring sunscreen for skin protection as Pulau Kapas weather can get too warm.
  • Stock up your chips or cookies from mainland (if you like to munch stuff at odd hours) as sundry shop is not easily available.
  • Watch out for sea currents and the corals as the sea can get very shallow very quickly at low tides. Avoid touching the corals and anemones, and be careful not to step on sea urchins!
  • If you like your night walks, remember to bring or get a torchlight.

How to Get to Pulau Kapas

10 Awesome Things to Do in Pulau Rawa Johor

October 24, 2019 by Eric GMH

When you thought Pulau Rawa is probably a boring place to visit in Malaysia, that’s where you are wrong!

Along the Straits of Johor, about 16 km away from Mersing town lies a big and beautiful island called Pulau Rawa. Known as the Maldives island (or some say Pearl of an island) of Johor, Pulau Rawa, otherwise known as Rawa Island, is a popular tourist spot.

Well, that is not without good reason: lovely white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, great views of the sun, sea and hills – there’s so much to love about this gem of an island.

You may have heard people mentioning about Rawa Island Johor, but you may not have much idea about what is there to do on the island, or you know, whether the island is even an interesting place to visit despite reading Pulau Rawa review online. Not to worry – let us convince you with a list of 10 awesome things to do in Pulau Rawa Johor just for you, so you can judge the place for yourself!

1. Stay and pamper yourself at Pulau Rawa Resort

A Rawa Island resort called Alang’s Rawa overlooking the white sandy beach.

Pulau Rawa has only two main resorts on the island, namely Rawa Island Resort and Alang’s Rawa. Rawa Island Resort is a more luxurious accommodation where you will be in for a relaxing treat with their spa and pretty, comfortable rooms, whereas Alang’s Rawa is the choice for you if you are holidaying on a budget.

Regardless, both accommodation offer about the same kind of warm hospitality and equally delicious variety of food. Buffet meals are usually included in their Pulau Rawa package deals. All you need to do is just stay and pamper yourself at any of the Rawa Island hotels – you deserve it anyway!

2. Swim, swim, swim!

Pulau Rawa is famous for its clean, clear waters, and swimming should be one of the must-do things on the island! Take advantage of the cool and refreshing waters the island has to offer – it does not cost you any fee and all you need is just your swimming costumes and good coverage of sunblock.

Why, just surrender to the waters already!

3. Snorkel and Scuba Dive like you never before

You can get guided snorkelling and marine tours there on Pulau Rawa.

Snorkelling and scuba diving are without a doubt among the most popular things to do in Pulau Rawa. Well, especially since it’s an island after all, one that is owned by the Sultan of Johor.

Treat yourself to an amazing snorkelling experience surrounded by a wonderful variety of fish and marine species. You can choose to have guided snorkelling and diving sessions if you are not familiar with the activity. You can even take the PADI courses here from Orca Scuba, rated to be a five-star PADI scuba diving centre.

Make the most out of the beautiful waters at Rawa Island with plenty of snorkelling and scuba diving like you never before!

4. Kayak solo or with friends

It is quite an experience to go kayaking on the island.

If you are a fan of exercising your arm strengths while enjoying the lovely sea view, this is an activity for you! You don’t get the chance to kayak much unless you are on an island holiday or visit the beach often, so why not do it here?

Rent a canoe and take your time rowing along the sea. To spice up the activity by a notch, consider having a kayak competition if you are travelling in a group – that’s also a great thing to do if you are organising a team-building event!

5. Stroll along Island Walk Trail

You can actually get a view of Pulau Besar, Pulau Tengah and Pulau Hujung from the trail.

Vacations are the time for you to wind down and relax, and Island Walk Trail on Pulau Rawa serves as a great calming thing to do. Take a stroll along the trail and treat yourself to lovely views of the sea and hill flora. You will also get a clear view of the three other islands close to Rawa Island, which are Pulau Besar, Pulau Tengah and Pulau Hujung.

Island Walk Trail connects you the Jungle Trekking path at the end of the walk, and if you want more walking and exercising, we encourage you to take on the jungle trekking route!

6. Jungle trek at Hill Top View

Pulau Rawa is quite a small island and you can easily jungle trek to the top of the hill. The reward that awaits you at the end of your hike is the splendid view of the South China Sea – something you shouldn’t miss while holidaying at Rawa Island.

The trek takes less than half an hour and you will be well guided with the signboards placed to lead you on the right track. The top of the hill also serves as a good Instagrammable spot for social media junkies. And if you happen to be there in the evening around 6 plus to 7 PM, you get to watch the sunset!

7.Go for BBQ nights!

Well, who could resist good food? Not even us for sure! And surprised to say, Pulau Rawa is an awesome place to enjoy having BBQ nights, especially since you get to munch on a great variety of dishes and sweet treats while revelling in a tranquil setting by the sea.

Feel free to eat to your heart’s content on the island! The BBQ party which is held on Saturdays, is a large one seeing most travellers will tuck in their meals there. You can also chill at any of the two bars on the island if you need some booze.

In the midst of food galore, who knows, maybe you could even meet someone with the same makan interest like you as your new makan buddy!

8. Camp along the beach

You can choose to camp along the beach instead of staying at Pulau Rawa hotel.

Feeling a bit more adventurous? You could consider staying cooped up in tents and camp for the night (or nights) along the Pulau Rawa beach rather than the conventional resort hotel stays.

Imagine having the cool sea breeze sweep over you and waking up to the gorgeous view of the sea and white sandy shore – it’s truly an amazing experience that you can only get when going on an island vacation. Not only that, camping allows you to feel closer to nature, which is good for finding your zen and reflecting on life and dreams.

9. Play Rawa Slide

This is the time you can act like a kid again with the Rawa Slide!

The Rawa Slide is one of the best attractions on the island and that is not unusual, considering it is a fun giant slide that provides you with a just-enough adrenaline rush before you land straight into the clear blue waters.

There are no other better chances to unleash your inner child within than going on the Rawa Slide. It may look scary for first-timers (don’t worry, it’s actually safe) but once you try it, you would probably want more though!

10. Explore the beauty of the island’s flora and fauna

Pulau Rawa has its own charming flora and fauna which you could explore in your visit. The Cactus Garden is among the notable attractions there, whereby you get the chance to appreciate the many different species of cacti – any hardcore fans of cactus here?

Apart from the cacti family all huddled in the garden, you will also notice a lot of peacocks roaming freely around the island. The elegant creatures are a sight to behold but beware, they can be bold enough to steal your food if you are caught unaware!

You can also spot corals on the beach – these pretty, diversely-shaped animals (yes, corals are marine invertebrates, not plants) are scattered along the sandy shores, adding to the overall beautiful landscape of the island.

When is the best time to visit Pulau Rawa?

Plan your trip wisely so that you can maximise your island holiday.

Rawa Island is still a little known marine-conserved island to many. It is also due to this reason that the natural beauty of this precious place is still well preserved and remains unpolluted, offering travellers and visitors the ideal spot for an island getaway.

The weather in Rawa Island may be quite ideal all year round – not too hot but just warm and sunny with a little bit of rain throughout. However, do take note of the monsoon seasons which will affect the island activities there such as snorkelling and diving.

Avoid travelling during the months of November and December as hotels tend to close their doors during the rainy climate. Rough tides are usually present in the months of May and June, so do cross that period out of your travel calendar too.

Tl;dr: Travel somewhere in January to April or July to October for the best Pulau Rawa experience!

Kapas Beach Chalet
图片资源:travel.cari.com.my

票价:每人RM35(单程)或RM70(往返)
