What comes to your mind when you think about island getaways? Perhaps Redang Island, Tioman Island, Langkawi Island… but have you ever heard about Lang Tengah Island or Pulau Lang Tengah? If you haven’t, you do now!
With more and more toursits discovering the Island and with article coverage about it, the Lang Tengah Island’s beauty is slowly coming into the limelight. This island that is situated off the coast of Terengganu, between Redang Island and Perhentian Island, is actually a hidden gem amongst the popular ones in Malaysia.
With white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, wonderful marine biodiversity, Lang Tengah Island has basically everything that makes up a pretty great island for vacation.
That’s exciting! How do I get to Lang Tengah Island?
If you are travelling from Kuala Lampur, you can go by car, which is a four-and-a-half hour ride, and have your car parked at Merang Jetty for RM10 per night. You could also take a bus or train to the city of Kuala Terengganu to reach Merang Jetty if you do not mind travelling for about 7 to 8 hours with stopovers.
Alternatively, you could travel by plane on domestic flights to Kuala Terengganu. The resorts on the island usually will provide a land transport service to pick you up from the airport to Merang Jetty. At Merang Jetty, there are ferry or boat transfers to bring you Lang Tengah Island, which operates three times per day. Each ride takes between 40 to 45 minutes.
Great! When is the best time to be there?

The coast of Terengganu is usually affected by the monsoon season between November and February, so that is definitely not the best time to visit the Island. However, when it’s between March to October, you don’t have to think twice – pack up for serene and exquisite getaway with no further ado!
Yes surely! Now, what are the best things to do in the Lang Tengah Island?
Well, note down this list!
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling
Wonderful variety of marine creatures to see when you go diving and snorkelling

What is an island holiday without a dip into the waters? You should not miss the opportunity to dive and snorkel at Pulau Lang Tengah, especially when the island is constantly praised for its beautiful diving and snorkelling sites. But if you’re not able to book a day for a snorkelling trip, no worries – you can snorkel on your own just off the beach.
And when you snorkel, you will mix around with schools of parrot fish, baby sharks, blue-ringed angelfish, clown fish and more, along with large collections of colourful corals and sea anemones. You can also avail a guided snorkelling and diving tours which every Lang Tengah Island resort provides through their diving centre with several packages for you to choose from.
Apart from that, you can also book up in canoe and kayak rentals if you are up for some boat rowing activities.
Blue Tears Tour
Yes, this is for real – see for yourself picturesque blue sand at night from the glowing creatures along the beach.
This is a popular attraction amongst the tourists on the Island! The term “Blue Tears” refers to the blue-dotted sand on the beaches at night, made because of the bioluminescent ostracods – these look like shrimps and are in the size of a plankton – and they illuminate the sand in blue colour. (Another bit of information – Most of these creatures use the blue light as a defence mechanism while some use the light to mate.)
But we have to let you know that this “Blue Tears” event is not available all the time, and only during when the weather suits the most for the ostracods.
Jungle Trekking

If you are up for some long walks in the jungle, you could trek in the jungles to Batu Kuching, a great place for you to stand on the rocks to capture the gorgeous sunrise and sunset. Depending on where you stay on the island, travelling to Batu Kuching may take half-an-hour or more.
There are yellow arrow marks on trees and rocks on the trek to guide you to Batu Kuching. Oh, bring along a torchlight, drinking water and wear proper footwear when jungle-trekking. Also, Batu Kuching has a lovely snorkelling site, so consider bringing snorkelling gears if you are planning to go for a swim!
If Batu Kuching is not challenging enough for you, you could also go for a more adventurous trek to Batu Bulan, which also has snorkelling sites for you to catch up with fish and turtles.
The Sunrise and Sunset
Enjoy pretty sunrise and sunset views from hotels in the Island or from the beach.
Apart from watching beautiful sunrise and sunset at Batu Kuching and Batu Bulan, you can also enjoy the lovely skies on any one of the beaches on the island. Remember to get your camera ready to take enchanting shots of the sunrise and sunset – the views are simply amazing that you can’t help but gaze in awe at Mother Nature’s raw beauty.
Island Hopping

It’s not just one island you have to enjoy – Lang Tengah Island is in the vicinity of Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian, so if you want a more populous, or a louder place for a change, consider hopping over to the two more popular islands via boat rides. Such rides are available at Lang Tengah Island resorts – just check with the resort you are staying at for more details on the type of boat ride packages they have to offer.
The Turtle Conservatory at Turtle Bay

Lang Tengah Island also houses a Turtle Conservatory at Turtle Bay, a more secluded beach among the other beaches of the island. Turtle Bay is the place where turtle conservation and research efforts are carried out by a team of volunteers called Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW), and also serves as the main nesting area for turtles.
If you happen to visit at a time where the turtles come to the ground, you will be lucky to see nests and maybe even some hatchlings, depending on the time of the year!
I love this! Now to another important question – what do I get to eat in the Lang Tengah Island?
Sunset Bar at Summer Bay Resort to chill and relax while enjoying beautiful sea views.
Compared to other islands in Malaysia, Lang Tengah Island is not as happening when it comes to food. Visitors usually dine at the resorts’ restaurants, which serve a rather good fare for a meal on the island – seafood, Asian or Western cuisine, you have them all.
You could also chill at each resort’s bar for some alcohol to relax the day and night away overlooking the calming beach scenery.
Now to wrap up, where do I stay in the Lang Tengah Island?

Here is what we recommend!
Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW)

Okay, this doesn’t exactly count as a Lang Tengah hotel, but if you want to stay on the island and do some voluntary work for the sake of conserving turtle species, you could consider helping out at the turtle conservatory by volunteering with the LTTW team. That way, you can bunk in with other volunteers as you work together on sea turtle conservation projects to protect the endangered turtle species and also their eggs from poachers.
For more details about volunteering for the LTTW, you can check their website here.
To date, there are only three Lang Tengah hotel and resorts currently located on the southern part of the island, but the best and most popular hotel Lang Tengah goes to… Summer Bay Resort!
